Biedermeier:  Modern Before its Time, Spitz & Pollack

Curvilinear bound box with sliding tracked drawers and Japanese shell-clasp closure; paper engineering; small bound books housed in drawers; Japanese handpainted silk bookcloth; museum board; fabricated numerals; and acrylic paint.

  • Currently, on view at The Art of the Book '08 , a travelling exhibition through Canada sponsored by The Canadian Bookbinder's Guild (recipient of Harmatan Leather Award).

The form of a writing cabinet circa 1810 houses a surprise 3-dimensional room and drawers with miniature illustrated books --- whose contents provide not only the history of this (furniture) style but a commentary on modern living --- in this curvilinear symbol of ideas ahead of their time.
